For thousands of years, the Cahuilla Indians have been singing their Bird Songs. On Saturday, the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians sponsored the “Singing the Birds” bird song festival that brought together the Cahuilla Indians and other tribes throughout Southern California to celebrate their heritage and culture.
The bird songs are an important part of native culture for tribes in Southern California and neighboring regions. Bird Songs tell the stories of the Cahuilla migration and the lessons learned along the way. Traditionally, about 300 songs were sung in order to tell the story and began at dusk.
