Alaska State Troopers are warning of a phone scam that appears to be targeting people listed on Alaska’s sex offender registry.
Troopers issued a Safety Advisory through their daily dispatch Wednesday that says a caller claims to be a trooper in the sex offender/child kidnapper registry office. The caller tells the victim that they are out of compliance, and threatens arrest if money is not paid.
“This is a scam,” the dispatch states.
Troopers say Alaska agencies will not contact people over the phone demanding money. They warn people not to provide payment to anyone claiming to be law enforcement that reaches out via phone or email.
If anyone believes they are out of compliance with the sex offender registry, your local police station or trooper post can give you information. “Do not use the phone number provided by the unknown caller,” Troopers say.
