There was an unexpected delay at a high school football game in central South Dakota Friday night. The Don Giese football field in Chamberlain had to be evacuated at the start of Friday night’s game after a man shot himself on the nearby practice field.
The Chamberlain Police Chief tells KSFY News that the 20-year-old man was injured, but is going to be ok. He said around 3:30 pm they were made aware of a Facebook post by a man who was threatening to take his own life.
A police investigation led to a chase with the man that ended at the practice field. The stadium was cleared as a precaution during the incident and the game was started about 30 minutes later. No one else was injured.
So far no charges have been filed.
Multiple agencies including the Brule County Sherriff’s Office, The Chamberlain Police Department, and the SD Highway Patrol were involved.
