Five Big 12 players were selected in the first two rounds of the 2018 MLB Draft on Monday, marking the most selections for the Conference in the first two rounds since 2009. Oklahoma outfielder Kyler Murray was picked ninth overall by the Oakland Athletics in day one of the 2018 MLB Draft on Monday evening.
Murray’s selection is the 39th time a Big 12 player has been taken in the first round/first compensatory rounds of the Major League Baseball Draft. Murray, 2018 All-Big 12 Honorable Mention, is the seventh top-10 selection from the Conference and the first since Oklahoma’s Jonathan Gray was picked third overall by the Colorado Rockies in 2013.
In the second round, Oklahoma outfielder Steele Walker was selected as the 46th overall pick by the Chicago White Sox. Walker was an All-Big 12 First Team selection in 2017 and 2018.
West Virginia’s Michael Grove was selected in the second round and 68th overall by the Los Angeles Dodgers. The right-handed pitcher did not play in 2018 due to injury. Grove was an All-Big 12 Second Team selection in 2017.
Texas Tech’s Grant Little was selected 74th overall by the San Diego Padres in the second round competitive balance round. The sophomore outfielder was an All-Big 12 First Team selection this season.
Immediately following Little’s pick, TCU first baseman Luken Baker was selected 75th overall by the St. Louis Cardinals in the second round compensation round C.
The league’s five selections in the first two rounds of the draft were the most in nine years and matched the five players taken during the first two rounds of the 2009 MLB Draft.
Rounds three through 10 of the 2018 MLB Draft will start on Tuesday, June 5, at Noon CT. The third and final day of the draft (Rounds 11-40) is set to begin at 11 a.m. CT on Wednesday, June 6.
