Thanksgiving is less than four weeks away and families in KELOLAND will struggle to put a solid meal on the table this holiday. Feeding South Dakota is hoping to change that with your help. The organization is launching its 8th Annual Thanksgiving Meal Drive.
Feeding South Dakota is hoping to stuff its shelves with everything needed for a perfect Thanksgiving meal.
“Our goal is hefty. We’re looking to make sure everybody has a meal that day,” Jennifer Stensaas said.
From turkeys to gravy mix and cranberries, Stensaas says the organization is off to a good start but could use more donations.
“Our squash, they’re huge squash. I’ve never seen more beautiful squash than this, this year,” Stensaas said.
The goal is to give out more than 3,000 meals to families statewide. One in 9 families in the state is food insecure. The Sioux Falls location will be hosting a drive-thru giveaway Nov. 17th.
“We see the faces of these people coming in to get these dinners and they’re so grateful. Last year we had an individual ride his bike clear out to where we’re located that very cold morning with a backpack to put whatever he could fit into his backpack,” Stensaas said.
If you can’t afford to drop off a turkey, Feeding South Dakota is also asking for the fixings including stuffing and cranberry sauce.
You can also donate money online. Twenty dollars will provide a traditional Thanksgiving meal for a family of four.
“If you don’t have time to get to the store and deliver those turkeys and fixings, we’ll do your shopping for you,” Stensaas said.
That donation will also be matched by long-time supporters up to $14,000 until Nov. 9 .
“We’re just grateful to be able to provide the help,” Stensaas said.
And provide a Happy Thanksgiving to those in need.
Feeding South Dakota in Sioux Falls served 500 families at the drive-thru giveaway last year but had to turn away 200. They don’t want to turn away anyone this year.
